A Travellerspoint blog

Home sweet home

It was an early start flying from Stewart Island [Stewart-Island-travel-guide-1318391] to Invercargill, then Christchurch and finally Auckland [Auckland-travel-guide-1139106]. If it hadn't been for the free flights from Auckland to Invercargill and back, the whole trip (airfare component) would have cost about $1000!!! One could get a package holiday to Asia with that kind of money ... yes, it's a more appropriate kind of holiday in winter.

We enjoyed our time with Peter and Anyta, the nature ... but not so much the cold ... silly us for not having done this earlier in the year.

Trip to Ulva Island

Peter operates the ferry from Golden Bay [Golden-Bay-travel-guide-1328578] to Ulva Island, where there are various nice nature trails ... the bird-song here is pretty amazing. You can see and nearly touch tiny Fantails, chubby Kererus and clucking Wekas.

If you scuff your shoes on the ground, some birds will fly down and try to look for worms in the exposed soil. That's a good way of attracting them.

The weather here is very cold for us ... in some ways we should have come in mid-summer. But in other ways, it isn't too bad as there is a big storm sweeping through the North Island causing untold destruction. All we have here are showers and cold air.

Lazing around

The day started off miserably ... it was very cold (for us anyway), and it kept raining on-and-off. We tried hard to stay warm.

Fortunately the sun came out to play later in the day and we were able to walk to Oban and grab a couple of delicious meals (for lunch) at he wonderful pub. Fortunately it rained while we were eating and cleared up after.

We hurried home while it was relatively warm for a shower. Peter has an outdoor shower ... I've always though it felt liberating to be showering amongst mother nature but in the chilly weather of the Deep South, it seems to have lost its appeal slightly.

To the Deep South

large_5550_13045038328420.jpgInside the Britten Norman Islander ... 9 passengers plus one pilot.
Kim has a former teaching colleague, Peter, that moved down to Stewart Island [Stewart-Island-travel-guide-1318391] many years ago. We had talked about visiting but it hadn't happened ... until now.

We flew from Auckland [Auckland-travel-guide-1139106] to Invercargill [Invercargill-travel-guide-1139598] (via Christchurch) and waited for what was meant to be three hours for our 20-minute flight from Invercargill to Stewart Island. Invercargill airport is small so it felt like a long wait ... and that was only for 2h15 minutes! The pilot (who doubled as check-in agent and tripled as baggage loader) walked round the terminal and rounded everyone up and we left about 40 minutes ahead of schedule.

During the short flight, the weather changed from clear blue to a cloudy grey. It was wet by the time we landed in Stewart Island. :-(

Another disrupted flight

View 2011 Summer into Fall in New Zealand on alexchan's travel map.

On the return train journey back into Dunedin [Dunedin-travel-guide-1139329], Air New Zealand rang to say that our flight had been delayed ... the first leg to Christchurch [Christchurch-travel-guide-1139252] was delayed and we'd miss our connection to Auckland [Auckland-travel-guide-1139106]. The kindly rebooked us on an earlier flight non-stop to Auckland.

We hopped of the train near Mosgiel rather than in central city and taxied to the airport with plenty of time to spare ... and enjoy in the Air New Zealand Koru Lounge :-)
